Fothergilla major

Overview

The witch-alder (Fothergilla major) is a small deciduous shrub with many amazing qualities. It is easy to grow and can tolerate a variety of soil types, sun and shade levels. In spring its branches are smothered in fragrant white bottlebrush-like blooms, while its glossy, bright green leaves turn a beautiful deep yellow, orange, and purple in the fall. In addition, it produces inconspicuous round nutlike fruits, helping wildlife find food in late summer and winter! The dwarf variety is an excellent choice for smaller gardens, and with its hardiness paired with its vibrant display of flowers and foliage, it's no wonder the witch-alder is prized by gardeners everywhere.
