Ceratostigma, or Abyssinian plumbago, should be given regular and consistent watering throughout the growing season (Spring - Fall). Keep the soil evenly moist, but not soggy or overly wet. Water about once a week, or whenever the top few inches of the soil begins to dry out. During hot, dry weather, increase the frequency of watering as needed. In cooler months, the plant needs less water. Reduce watering to about every other week, or wait until the soil is nearly dry before irrigating again.

Ceratostigma abyssinicum, also known as Abyssinian Plumbago, requires bright sunlight for optimal health. It should receive 5-6 hours of direct sunlight each day, preferably in the morning or mid-day, as intense afternoon sunlight can burn the leaves. When the weather is mild and the plant is kept outdoors, it can even tolerate full sun. During hotter months, some afternoon shade may be beneficial.

Ceratostigma should be pruned in late winter to early spring, once new growth begins. This allows the plant to focus its energy on new shoots and foliage growth. Prune the dead stems and woody branches that are no longer contributing to the overall shape of the plant. If the shrub has grown too large, it may be necessary to prune more heavily. To do so, remove up to 1 third of the branches, cutting them back to a 1/4 inch above the previous years growth. This encourages healthy, bushy growth and helps to produce larger flower clusters. Ceratostigma should be pruned regularly to maintain its natural form.
