Chilopsis linearis
Overview
The desert willow (Chilopsis linearis) is an amazing and unique plant that's perfect for arid climates. Native to the American Southwest, it thrives in areas of hot temperatures & limited water. Yet despite its harsh environment, it blossoms with delicate white, purple, or pink flowers in late summer. Its stunningly bright petals stand out against the twilight sky, making the desert willow a thing of beauty. What's more, it's hardy and low-maintenance for gardening enthusiasts everywhere!
Care Guide
Watering
Desert willow (Chilopsis linearis) should be watered deeply once a week during its first year in the garden, and twice a week during hot months in subsequent years. To water, slowly provide 1-2 inches of water directly to the root zone of the plant. Adding a 2-3 in layer of mulch around the base of the plant can help to conserve soil moisture. During extreme heat, water twice weekly. Water should be applied slowly to allow it to soak in deep in to the root zone. Avoid splashing the leaves, as this can lead to fungal diseases.
Light
Desert willow (Chilopsis linearis) grows best in full sun. This desert-dwelling tree thrives in sunny areas with clear sky and bright light. Ideal spots for planting desert willow include south-facing spots that are protected from strong winds. When it comes to sunlight, desert willow should receive 12-14 hours of sun during the summer and at least 8-10 hours of sun during the winter. In areas with extreme heat, they may require some afternoon shade, although they will benefit from the afternoon sun in more temperate climates. Plants can also benefit from naturally-occurring lighting. Morning sun will help the plant develop its bark and form its proper structure. Early morning rays also support strong flower production. Later in the day, afternoon sun allows for additional flowering and promotes healthy foliage growth. When caring for desert willows, it is important to remember that they need at least 8 hours of light per day to stay healthy and vibrant.
Temperature
Hardiness zone 7-9.
Pruning
Desert willow should be pruned to maintain its shape and encourage flower production. It is best to prune desert willow in the late winter or early spring. This is the best time to remove dead, damaged, and diseased branches. You can also lightly prune and shape the shrub to promote its natural size and shape. However, avoid pruning desert willow too severely as this can reduce its flowering potential. Also, it's best not to prune more than a third of the total plant growth at 1 time. When pruning, make sure to use sterilized pruning shears.
