Overview
The magnificent silk floss tree (Chorisia speciosa) is a sight to behold! Its flowering season brings vibrant pink dream-like blooms that create a stunning contrast against its grey-green foliage. Its large thorns provide a unique twist to the amazing landscape of the tree. Its large, brown and spiny seed pods contain abundant fibres which can be collected and turned into pulp, which in turn can be used to make paper and furniture. These fibres make the tree both robust and beautiful. It's truly a remarkable species.

Watering
Water the plant deeply and thoroughly once per week, allowing the soil to dry out slightly between waterings. The soil should be kept evenly moist but not soggy. During periods of extreme heat and drought, you may need to increase watering of the silk floss tree to twice per week. Monitor the soil's moisture levels and adjust watering as needed.
Light
The silk floss tree needs a minimum of 5 hours of direct sunlight each day in order to thrive; however, it will often do best with at least 6 to 8 hours of full sun. It should be planted in a spot that gets access to sunlight for most of the day. If your region gets strong afternoon sun, it’s best to place the tree on the east or north side of the garden. If your region gets very hot summers, it would be wise to choose a spot that is shaded in the afternoon.

Pruning
Silk floss tree (Chorisia speciosa) should be pruned when it is young and actively growing, usually early in the spring growth period. Pruning should be light initially, to remove crossed or dead branches, and to shape and train the tree. Heavier pruning can be done in late spring or early summer, and should focus on removing dense clusters of branches, and keeping the canopy open and airy. Pruning should be done before flowering for aesthetic purposes, and should not be undertaken after the leaves have turned red and the flowers have developed.
