Ecballium elaterium

Overview

Squirting cucumber (Ecballium elaterium) is a unique, amazing plant species. It earns its name from its defense mechanism: when touched, the cucumber can project a stream of liquid from its stem up to five feet! In addition to its interesting quirk, the cucumber is beloved for its bright yellow flowers and a pleasant smell. The cucumber is also edible, though its bitter taste is often enough to deter consumption. An easy-to-grow crop, squash cucumbers are a perfect addition to any garden!

Care Guide

💧

Watering

Squirting cucumbers (Ecballium elaterium) require frequent and consistent watering to stay healthy and thrive. The ideal schedule for watering is twice a week using enough to thoroughly soak the soil, but allowing the top inch or 2 of soil to remain dry between waterings. Water the plant until water freely flows from the bottom of the pot. During very hot weather, water more often. Also, in very hot temperatures, water in the mornings to prevent water from evaporating too quickly from the leaves.

☀️

Light

Squirting cucumber (Ecballium elaterium) prefers 6-8 hours of direct sunlight a day. This should be spread out over the entire day, as opposed to being concentrated in a single period of time. The cucumber should be placed in a bright, well-lit area, protected from the wind so the plant won’t become scorched. Avoid putting it in a place that will be exposed to direct and intense sunlight in the afternoons, as this can lead to wilting leaves and sunburned plants.

Pruning

Squirting cucumbers should be pruned in the early spring before new growth begins. Removal of dead, damaged, or diseased stems should be done which are easy to identify. Prune off dead or diseased leaves and clean scissors with rubbing alcohol between plants and cuts. Remove any yellowing or wilted leaves from the plant or prune any branches or stems that don't seem healthy. Additionally, prune branches that appear too long, congested or that interfere with other stems. Also, the squirting cucumber will benefit from pruning to encourage bushier growth. Exercise moderation when pruning so to not over-prune the plant.
